Saginaw was the world's leading lumber city in the 1870s and later a major GM manufacturing hub. The industry's collapse left it one of the state's poorest cities per capita, majority-Black, with a long history of investment from the Black church network — AME, COGIC, Baptist — that anchors its civic life.
Saginaw's Black-church coalition has historically held the pro-life position and understood abortion's disproportionate impact on Black communities. The abolitionist argument extends that conviction into civil-rights terms: equal protection under the law for the smallest class of Black lives.

A majority of Saginaw County voters approved Proposal 22-3, the Reproductive Freedom for All amendment. Statewide, it passed 56.7% to 43.3%. A majority vote does not settle whether preborn image-bearers deserve equal protection under the law — that is a moral question the ballot cannot answer, and it is exactly the question the abolition movement asks Michigan to reopen.
