Midland is the world headquarters of Dow Chemical — the city was built by Dow in the early 20th century, and its civic and philanthropic life is still shaped by the company. The Midland Center for the Arts, the Dow Gardens, and the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation all descend from that industrial legacy.
Midland is a wealthy, Republican-leaning city with a dense Catholic and evangelical Protestant church network. The abolitionist argument has natural traction here — the theology aligns and the political culture is open to it.

A majority of Midland County voters approved Proposal 22-3, the Reproductive Freedom for All amendment. Statewide, it passed 56.7% to 43.3%. A majority vote does not settle whether preborn image-bearers deserve equal protection under the law — that is a moral question the ballot cannot answer, and it is exactly the question the abolition movement asks Michigan to reopen.
