East Grand Rapids's abolitionist inheritance

East Grand Rapids is one of the wealthiest small cities in West Michigan — a Grand Rapids suburb built around Reeds Lake, home of the Gaslight Village shopping district, East Grand Rapids High School (perennially top-ranked in the state), and a strong Christian Reformed / Reformed Church in America presence.

The confessional Reformed theology of East Grand Rapids' CRC and RCA congregations teaches unambiguously the personhood of the preborn from conception. Abolition is the natural civil-law expression of that pulpit teaching in one of Michigan's most-densely-Reformed neighborhoods.

Prop 3 vote · Kent County · 2022

54.7%Yes
45.3%No

A majority of Kent County voters approved Proposal 22-3, the Reproductive Freedom for All amendment. Statewide, it passed 56.7% to 43.3%. A majority vote does not settle whether preborn image-bearers deserve equal protection under the law — that is a moral question the ballot cannot answer, and it is exactly the question the abolition movement asks Michigan to reopen.
