Michigan's first anti-slavery society was organized here

Lenawee County is the birthplace of organized abolition in Michigan. In 1832, Quaker poet and editor Elizabeth Margaret Chandler founded the Logan Female Anti-Slavery Society near Adrian — the first anti-slavery society of any kind in the state. Laura Smith Haviland then built the Raisin Institute on that same abolitionist soil: an interracial, coeducational school that also served as a major Underground Railroad station, sheltering hundreds of freedom seekers moving north. Haviland personally traveled into slave states to bring families out. Michigan's abolition movement did not begin in Detroit; it began in Adrian, and it began with people who refused to grant the pro-slavery consensus the moral legitimacy it demanded.
