Royal Oak is Woodward Corridor's hip nightlife center — a dense, walkable, historically-artist-and-professional suburb where the Detroit Zoo has stood since 1928 and the annual Woodward Dream Cruise rolls past 40,000-strong crowds every August. Its politics run steadily Democratic; its churches are a mix of Catholic (Shrine of the Little Flower — Fr. Charles Coughlin's controversial 1930s radio parish), mainline Protestant (Royal Oak First United Methodist), and PCA-adjacent (New City Presbyterian).
Royal Oak's dominant political direction is not naturally friendly to the abolitionist argument. But the confessional Christian congregations here have never accepted the pro-choice framework, and New City Presbyterian in particular has a track record of clear pro-life teaching. The abolition case in Royal Oak is a case for the church against the culture.
