Independence Charter Township contains Clarkston — a wealthy small city — and much of the surrounding lakes-region rural-suburban Oakland County. Home to the DTE Energy Music Theatre (the busiest outdoor concert venue in the country) and a strong Reagan-Republican political culture.
The Reformed, evangelical Protestant, and Catholic churches in Independence hold the historic pro-life teaching. This is one of the receptive audiences in Oakland County for the abolitionist argument.

A majority of Oakland County voters approved Proposal 22-3, the Reproductive Freedom for All amendment. Statewide, it passed 56.7% to 43.3%. A majority vote does not settle whether preborn image-bearers deserve equal protection under the law — that is a moral question the ballot cannot answer, and it is exactly the question the abolition movement asks Michigan to reopen.
