Immediate, total abolition — no exceptions
Pontiac was, for the better part of the 20th century, the manufacturing heart of General Motors — home to the Pontiac division, Fisher Body, and the enormous factories that employed 90,000 people at their peak. The industry's collapse left Pontiac one of Michigan's poorest cities per capita, with a majority-Black population, a shrinking tax base, and a churn of state-imposed emergency managers throughout the 2010s.
Pontiac's Black church network — historic AME, COGIC, and Baptist congregations dating back to the Great Migration — has always held that abortion disproportionately harms Black communities and Black babies. The abolitionist framing, that abortion is homicide and Black lives are equally protected by law, is the natural theological and civil-rights extension of that conviction.
We are not currently aware of an abortion facility operating inside Pontiac city limits. The closest providers to Pontiac residents are in Southfield (Northland) and Sterling Heights (see the nearby-cities strip below).
Oakland County voted 62% in favor of Proposal 3 in 2022. Pontiac's Black-majority precincts split closer to 55% — the Black-church network's historic opposition to abortion is visible in that number.
