Michigan Christians,

Often we see Muslim Communists running in the Democratic Party like Abdul El-Sayed and assume the decision of who to vote for will be an easy one: just don't vote for the party of Muslim Communists. However, the faithful abolitionist should be more discerning. Abolitionists know that the truth not only foundational to abortion or politics but to all of life is the infallible Word of God. We also know that political candidates work for the citizens and must earn the vote of the citizens by holding correct positions, supporting the right ideologies and organizations, and acting upon those beliefs with conviction. Given this, who should the faithful abolitionist vote for? How should we determine who earns our vote?

The Bible is our ultimate truth and authority, so if it has anything to say on the matter of voting and government, we should follow it. The faithful abolitionist follows the Word of God.

In Biblical times, voting was not a thing. However, Biblical principles can still guide who we are to vote for, because the Bible does have a lot to say about what makes a good ruler. Deuteronomy 1:17 (ESV) tells the magistrate to "not be partial in judgement." Psalm 82:3-4 says "Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute." The prior verse criticizes the unjust ruler that shows partiality. There are multitudes of other passages that call partiality under the law unjust. So, we should vote for rulers who uphold justice by not showing partiality. Besides protecting the weak under the law, rulers are to uphold justice by equally punishing evildoers. Romans 13 calls the governing authorities God's sword against the wrongdoer. One of the very first foundational laws and punishments God gives is found in Genesis 9:6 which says "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image." Notice that there is an evil (murder) accompanied by a just punishment (death) followed by God's reasoning for why this is just (humans are made in God's image). This passage narrows the focus of justice to the topic abolitionists are focused on: murder. Getting even more granular to the topic of the type of murder that is child sacrifice, the Bible has even more to say. Not only are rulers supposed to give the death penalty to those who sacrifice children as a just penalty for their actions, but if one does not punish child sacrifice and closes their eyes to the practice, God will turn his face from them and cut them off from their people (Leviticus 20:1-5).

So, what's the takeaway from these passages? Those we vote for to be our civil magistrates should enact justice by
  1. Not showing partiality
  2. Punishing evil and
  3. Not closing their eyes to child sacrifice.
The topic of abortion is especially important in considering these things, because abortion is the main area of American society where millions upon millions of human beings made in God's image are murdered, and the murder is happening completely legally. A legislator's view on abortion is foundational to their overarching political ideology. If a legislator does not support punishing murder, this violates almost every major Biblical command God gives to rulers on enacting justice. If a legislator has a wrong view of abortion, nothing else really matters. They are abdicating the main responsibilities God gives for civil leadership.

Using the Biblical principles for good rulers, who is for abortion abolition in the state of Michigan? For the two main races, nobody. Of course Democrats who are pro-choice show partiality against unborn children and for child murderers; they do not punish evildoers, and they not only close their eyes to child sacrifice but often fully support the practice and protect it. So, Democrats are off the table. What about Republicans? Well, Mike Rogers and John James are both staunchly pro-life. John James shows partiality against unborn children by supporting bills that protect some unborn children but condemn others to legally sanctioned death. He also shows partiality towards mothers who murder their kids, being endorsed by pro-life groups that do not want to punish any women for getting an abortion but rather only punish the doctors or institutions that allowed her to get one. Mike Rogers is similar, being closely aligned with pro-life groups. In fact, Mike Rogers was contacted many times over the last several months by email and by phone on whether he supported abolishing abortion, and didn't even care enough to respond once. He didn't even want clarification or more information about what abolition was. He didn't respond at all. Mike Rogers is apathetic. He sins by not doing what he knows is right (James 4:17). He turns his eyes away from child sacrifice. He would rather get elected than take a strong stance for the unborn. So why would we reward him?

Why would Christians give Rogers or James our vote when they don't care about the main issue Michigan is facing; the issue killing tens of thousands of unborn Michiganders every single year? Why would we give them our vote when they don't care enough about it to answer our questions or even give a basic response to a future constituent? Why give them our vote when they fail to meet every single one of the aforementioned Biblical takeaways of what a good legislator should be? This is not a fringe issue; this is the most important and telling political issue of our day, and they fail to live up to the standard. Do not vote for Mike Rogers or John James. Research what politicians you can vote for in your local elections and see if they too fail to live up to the Biblical minimum standard for a good ruler. If they do, don't vote for them either.

If the faithful abolitionist shouldn't vote for Democrats and also shouldn't vote for most Republicans (specifically John James and Mike Rogers), who should they vote for instead? Nobody. Nobody earned your vote in this election cycle. The only way supposedly Christian Republicans will learn that they aren't doing what the voters want is if we actually don't vote for them. Instead, write in something like "Abortion Abolition" on your ballot. Is this throwing away your vote? Pretty much. Is this necessary for politicians to realize that they need to change? Yes. If we keep calling for politicians to change but then we continue to vote for them, we are enabling the very thing we are opposing, which is the stagnant pro-life apathy that has accomplished nothing (and in fact gone backwards) in Michigan in the last century. Besides a narrow Democrat win in 2022, Republicans have had a senate majority in Michigan since 1984. What do they have to show for it?

Here are a few common objections to this political strategy and why they miss the mark:

Nobody is perfect, so we should just vote for the better option.

It is true that nobody is perfect, but Biblically, supporting abolition as a ruler is the bare minimum; not simply one of many things that good Christians can disagree on. A leader that fails to uphold the aforementioned basic Biblical standards of justice is simply not a good leader. Christianity allows for differing opinions on many issues, but abortion is not one of them.

The Republicans may be bad, but Democrats are much worse and will destroy the country. Voting for the lesser of two evils is a sad necessity.

Romans 3:8 tells us not to do evil that good may come. Voting for the lesser of two evils is still voting for evil. If God judges our nation's apathy by allowing us to be ruled by those who will destroy our country, so be it. In that case, we deserve to be destroyed, as we are a nation in rebellion against God that kills millions of children each year. Hopefully we can avoid that judgement by national repentance, turning from our sin and abolishing child sacrifice. That hope will never be a reality if we ignore God's commands to not do evil that good may come out of a sense of pragmatism or political strategy.

Aren't we throwing away our vote because there are no abolitionist candidates in Michigan?

Yes.

Why vote at all if our only three options are evil, more evil, or throwing away our vote?

Voting shows that citizens did not simply not show up to vote, but rather that they showed up to vote and did not vote for the available options. In other words, politicians will know when looking at the numbers that the election being lost was not simply a matter of low voter turnout; it was a matter of people disliking their positions. It is our job to make them pay for not earning our vote, and then tell them why they did not earn our vote and how they can earn it in the future (or how future candidates can if the current ones are too stubborn to change).

So, what should the faithful abolitionist do? Figure out if your local politicians support abolition or not either through our website or by contacting them. Learn how to contact them by checking out our previous blogs! Then, base your vote on whether they turn their face from child sacrifice or not. Vote accordingly on November 3rd. Finally, let others know who you support or don't support and why. Interesting conversations can be had when friends and family learn that you don't blindly support either political party. Use that as an avenue to talk about abolition and the need for the gospel. Our political candidates and our culture as a whole definitely need the gospel as opposed to fake performative Christianity.

Psalm 94:20 ESV
Can wicked rulers be allied with you,
those who frame injustice by statute?
They band together against the life of the righteous
and condemn the innocent to death.
