Trenton's abolitionist inheritance

Trenton is a downriver Detroit suburb on the Detroit River — historically a shipbuilding and industrial city, now a wealthier suburb with the Trenton Historical Museum and Elizabeth Park (Michigan's oldest county park).

The Catholic and Methodist church network here holds the historic pro-life teaching. The abolitionist case is the same case as in Southgate, Wyandotte, and Riverview: the theology and the law are misaligned, and the alignment is achievable.

Detroit — 'Midnight,' the last stop before freedom

Detroit's Underground Railroad codename was 'Midnight,' the final station on the freedom corridor before the crossing to Canada at 'Dawn' (Windsor and Amherstburg). Second Baptist Church on Monroe Street, founded by escaped freedom seekers themselves, sheltered an estimated 5,000 people between 1836 and the Civil War. George DeBaptiste, William Lambert, and the Colored Vigilant Committee ran a highly organized escape network from the Detroit riverfront. When federal marshals came to enforce the Fugitive Slave Act, Detroit abolitionists physically prevented seizures in the streets. That corridor of moral resistance is preserved in Detroit's own memory, and today's abolitionist work in Wayne County stands squarely in it.

A majority vote does not settle whether preborn image-bearers deserve equal protection under the law — that is a moral question the ballot cannot answer, and it is exactly the question the abolition movement asks Michigan to reopen.
