Sault Ste. Marie is Michigan's oldest continuously-inhabited European settlement — a Franco-Ojibwe city on the St. Marys River that has been a trading post since 1668. Home to the Soo Locks and Lake Superior State University.
The Catholic parishes here — descendants of the 17th-century Jesuit mission — hold the historic teaching against abortion without compromise. The abolitionist argument in "the Soo" is the argument for civil law to catch up with 350+ years of Catholic teaching.

A majority of Chippewa County voters rejected Proposal 22-3 — the Reproductive Freedom for All amendment. Statewide it passed 56.7% to 43.3%, but Chippewa County did not go along.
